The Wind, well, that's another story

“My challenge is creating a visual story that you, the viewer, can walk into and look around.  Most of the time I paint on location, carrying my “studio” in my backpack.  I like to harmonize with the elements, moving shadows and the sun alike.  The Wind, well that’s another story.

“Influenced by the Russian Impressionists who used strong colors, patterns and shapes, my paintings provide a way to hold onto a memory in a way a photograph simply cannot do. I invite you to feel the rhythm of the brushwork in my painting. Look for the painting’s story. What do you see?

“I work in gouache, an opaque water color, which allows me to react and share what I’m seeing and feeling in a fast-changing outdoor environment.”

His Escape

After a fulfilling career in corporate training, Jay escaped in 2015, repurposing his priorities and finding his way into an art studio where he discovered plein air painting. Finding gouache, an opaque water color medium, Jay met the perfect painting partner for his outdoor painting adventures.

Jay was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. With his wife, Melissa, he has lived in Michigan, Florida and Tennessee before making Edmond, OK his home since 2018.

Art Can Heal

His landscape paintings provide a way to hold onto a memory in a way a photograph cannot do. Jay creates that memory painting on location carrying his “studio” in his backpack. If the weather’s bad, he’ll be in the studio enjoying another day of painting.

Believing that art can help heal, Jay volunteers as a “Paint Buddy”, supporting Art with a Heart, a philanthropic organization that pairs artists and children with cancer at the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in OKC, OK.

Jay is a member of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition and the Paseo Arts Association. His paintings have been shown in several exhibits and is currently displaying his works at Gallery Grazioso in Guthrie, OK.
