Joey Frisillo

Artist Statement

“From my home and studio that overlook an Oklahoma lake with sandy beaches, sandstone cliffs and rugged, cross timber woods, I study the landscape and the effects of light on nature’s colors and patterns.

“My paintings include both outdoor studies and studio work. I am attracted to tranquil settings that reflect my quiet nature. Whether I paint sweeping vistas or more intimate subjects, I use rich and lively color to capture what I see.

“My paintings also reflect my fascination with texture as part of the creative experience. I start with a transparent layer of paint as the first shapes go on the canvas. Quite often these are just abstract bits of color that lay the foundation for what will go on top. Transparent areas glow and I try to leave some of them to contrast with more opaque passages of paint. This lends a variety to the surface and the painting as a whole.”

Joey Frisillo’s love of drawing and painting began while growing up in Ft Wayne, Indiana. This led to a Fine Art major at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Primarily a landscape artist, she works from life on location and from her photographic references. She seeks to portray her subjects in a manner that is realistic yet expressive. Collectors love the soft, tranquil mood her work evokes.

Frisillo’s artistic style and skill has garnered many honors including “Best of Show” at Women Artists of the West, 38th Invitational in Chicago, IL and an Award of Excellence from Art of the West magazine.

Her involvement with the art community spans both national and regional organizations. She has achieved signature status in the Pastel Society of America, Women Artists of the West and Ozark Pastel Society and an associate membership in the Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Society. She served on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition for nine years. She has taught pastel and oils through Gilcrease and Philbrook Museums as well as local and regional art groups.
