“I am fascinated with the spirit of living beings, both human and not, and am happily surprised and delighted when I can reveal their life’s light in my work.”

Bringing My Visions to Life

Most days you will find Shirley in her new studio west of Wynnewood happily mixing oils, painting, scraping revealing layers and bringing her visions to life on canvas and panels.  Heart tugging scenes, character lines, life lived long, if not well, these are things that pull her in and keep me painting.”

Interest in the Old West

Much of Shirley’s work is informed by her lifelong interest in the Old West and her early years on her grandfather’s Oklahoma farm.

She returned to Oklahoma from Texas in 2016 and now lives on a rural property with art inspiration everywhere she looks. The rich heritage of Texas and Oklahoma has given her a window into the life of the west that finds its way onto her canvas.

Her Roots

Shirley’s roots run deep from her maternal grandmother’s journey in a covered wagon to Oklahoma Territory, and to the 7th great grandfather, a French Huguenot nobleman who arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1663 and became a wealthy pirate! She is continuing to learn about her immigrant heritage from Great Britain, Ireland/Scotland/Wales and most surprising of all Scandinavia.

Intrigued by the human spirit, she strives to depict character and emotion in her figurative work. She believes that emotion is also found in landscapes and animals of the west. Oils have become her passion as she scrapes layers of paint to reveal subtleties of underlying layers in her representational work.

Shirley’s art is in collections internationally and throughout the United States. She is represented by Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.
